Jigsaw puts the pieces together for Autumn/Winter 2010

Curved stone staircases feature prominently at Jigsaw's flagship store on King's Road
While most of us are relieved that summer may finally be here to stay, we as trade journalists have been given a glimpse of what style and shape fashions will take this coming autumn and winter.  One of my favourite British brands is Jigsaw, which used its new flagship store on King's Road in Chelsea to be the backdrop for unveiling their autumn/winter 2010 collection.  Jigsaw has been involved in the design, manufacturing and retailing of clothes and accessories for over thirty-five years. Since its first store opened in Hampstead in 1972, Jigsaw has remained focused on selling desirable, high quality clothes and accessories in individual and stimulating shopping environments.  No two Jigsaw stores are the same. By not being formulaic, each Jigsaw store is designed to be sympathetic to its surroundings and with respect to the existing architecture.  They always try to find interesting buildings to trade from and every store is designed in a unique way, to reflect and enhance the specific features of each location.  For example, their store at Spitalfields is situated at one of the main entrances to the famous Spitalfields market. With beautiful stripped wooden floors and stunning chandeliers this cosy store has kept all the charm of the listed building in which it is located.  Their store at St. Christopher's Place just off London's hectic Oxford Street is a pleasant haven.  Designed by Nigel Coates, the original concept pictured a natural lake spanned by a traditional, arched wooden bridge - the hanging rails represent water lilies around the lake with a boat designed as a cash desk! Recently the shop has had new timber floors added.  The long established store at The Strand, directly opposite Charing Cross Station, is distinctive thanks to it's oringinal external architecture providing large, rounded shop front windows.  And its flagship store on King's Road is no exception.

    Jigsaw's autumn/winter 2010 unveiled at King's Road flagship store.
The large flagship store on King's Road  was originally the Chapel building for the Duke of York's Barracks.  The designers liaised very closely with the area's conservation officer, when planning the refit of the building's interior, to ensure that some of the feel of the original Chapel could be retained. The interior consisted of curved stone staircases, bespoke cast balustrades and fixtures, hand made lights, reclaimed flooring and custom made furniture and joinery - a fitting backdrop for unveiling Jigsaw's AW2010 collection which is described as “Faded Grandeur”, with the feel of a vintage English home at it’s heart, according to its design director Tess Richards. This is her second season with inspiration taken from the art of libretti, Opera. With the reinvention of vintage fabrics, the creation of contemporary prints and the design of rich, sumptuous cloths, the collection embodies the spirit of four different and dramatic musical works.
    The four themes are:-
La Boheme – quirky, rich eccentricity…think Gosford Park glamour with an un-done rural air.
A Life for the Tsars – beautiful, clean and elegant – the perfect combination for any leading lady.
Amadeus – casual opulence blending chunky knits with glittery fabrics for effortless day to night dressing.
Madame Butterfly – just a pop of colour to enhance the drama of the collections above.
The press event was adorned with reels of orchestral score and vintage instruments. A stunning grand piano sat proudly at the foot of the store’s sweeping staircase amidst tumbling sheets of music, as the Kings Road was turned into a theatrical wonderland showcasing the harmony of all the new pieces.
Jigsaw currently operates over 40 stores in the UK. In addition to Jigsaw, the group includes the well-known brand Kew, which also operates stores across the UK; The Shop at Bluebird, offering a cool and unique collection of women’s and men’s designer brands on London’s King's Road; and finally, the quintessentially English Cabbages & Roses.  In 1996 Jigsaw Junior was established to extend the product range from purely women’s fashion. The brand has also seen international expansion in the USA, where it currently trades from 7 stores on the West Coast.

Flowers and Chelsea go hand in hand like love and marriage

Couture bridal gowns decorated with fresh flowers at White Gallery London. Photo by Lucia Carpio

It was another lovely warm day in London today, thankfully not as scorching as it had been in the weekend.  I was in posh Chelsea.  As I was not able to attend the prestigious and chic  Chelsea Flower Show - the highlight event on the international horticultural society's calendar - as tickets had already been sold out when I got around to it, so I dropped in the Saatchi Gallery which was transformed for the first time into an exhibition venue for wedding gown designers.
Named  "White Gallery London", the event showcased some of the finest bridal gowns by designers from around the world.  Among the highlights was a display of couture fresh flowers - not in vases or flower pots, but on exquisite bridal gowns by designers Ian Stuart, Ritva Westneius and Stewart Parvin shown here.  They had collaborated with celebrity florists to produce the handmade masterpieces.  Each designer had paired with a florist to match each other's creative style - Ian Stuart with Neill Strain, Ritva Westenius with Zita Elze and Stewart Parvin with Matthew Dickinson - to produce the one-of -a-kind flower wedding dresses.
Red Bridal dress from Hollywood Dreams. Photo by Lucia Carpio

Elsewhere at the fair, I spotted beautiful wedding gowns in bold red from Hollywood Dreams (perfect for those Oriental brides who traditionally opt for auspices red than white).

Among my favourite were beautiful gowns at Alan Hannah where designer Marguerite Hannah had added splashes of colour on her white bridal gowns, by decorating them with hand-painted floral motifs or appliqued floral corsages.
The model in the photo below shows off one of their best-selling designs.
Marguerite suggested the bride to do away her bouquet of flowers and hold a nice purse instead.  I think the same can be said for those gowns decorated with fresh flowers as mentioned above.

Multi-functional Technology maintains wellbeing of Sports enthusiasts

    Bogner golfwear.
    Boss GREEN label sportswear.
Now that the good weather seems to have returned to the UK (hopefully for a long while, fingers and toes crossed) sports enthusiasts can enjoy outdoor activities again, such as playing golf or tennis, in the leadup to the forthcoming major tournaments here.  No doubt all eyes will be on the top performers such as Tiger Woods who has announced he will play at St. Andrews Open in July. But with mounting physical and personal life problems, the last thing on his mind would probably be how well his shirts will hold up.  But with active sports, comes perspiration which can cause fluid loss that in turn can affect performance.  And as a result, the person can experience a decrease in stamina and concentration.  Schoeller Technologies AG: the Switzerland-based licensing company for innovative textile technologies, has developed the 3XDRY® technology that supports a player’s overall wellbeing, as perspiration is immediately transported away from the body and distributed widely across his clothing. As a result, the moisture can evaporate very quickly and close to the body, supporting the body’s natural cooling function, therefore reducing perspiration. The natural cooling effect of 3XDRY® ensures greater wellbeing and sustained energy. Also, the  unpleasant feeling of a shirt sticking to the skin occurs less frequently and disagreeable perspiration marks are practically invisible from the outside. Sportswear brands that embrace this technology include Bogner and Hugo Boss (Green label).  Bogner has been successfully utilising the 3XDRY technology in various golf shirts that provide breathability and fast-drying functions, such as  these in single jersey with appliqued badges.  Hugo BOSS' Green label uses the 3XDRY® finishing technology also for their golf and sportswear collection in classic cuts.
“Golfers out early in the dewy morning benefit from the high level of water resistance of this textile finish; for example when crossing wet fairways. Later, when the sun is beating down around midday, the advanced moisture management helps cool the body down,” explains José Janga, Senior Head of Creative Management BOSS Green.
Studies have shown that a loss of moisture through perspiration of as low as 2 % of body weight, performance capacity sinks by up to 20 %. The result is a drop in stamina and concentration, which can negatively affect the score over 18 holes, as well as the enjoyment of the game. According to Schoeller, textiles with a 3XDRY® finish also dry quicker after washing. The high level of functionality remains intact for well over 50 washing cycles and can be reactivated time and again through heat treatment (ironing or dryer).  Garment technologists take note.  As for Tiger Woods, his sponsor is top sports brand Nike which utilises moisture management also for its golfwear to keep the world's No. 1 feeling cool and looking swell, no matter what.  Nike’s new advert featuring Tiger Woods seems to draw a line under the scandal surrounding the disgraced golfer’s private life and focus on his return to the sport.

HAIR - a Nostalgic Musical "Trip" worth taking

Audience join cast in finale of HAIR. Photo by Lucia Carpio.
If you are a child of the flower power era of the late 1960s, the revival of the HAIR rock musical now showing in the West End (London’s Gielgud Theatre) should set you on a nostalgic trip back to the time of the free-loving anti-establishment hippies. Diane Paulus's revival of HAIR, which opened in London last month with an entire Broadway company, is an exuberant production that captures the spirit of the 1960s, when a generation of young Americans who believed in flower power, love, peace, astrology and chemical experiments was sent to the Vietnam war, and sparked mass protests.  The musical is about a group of young people in New York City’s East Village who band together as a tribe. The multi-racial-integrated cast gives an energetic and vibrant performance that breaks down the barrier between the stage performers and the audience.  As part of the finale, the audience was invited to join the cast to dance on stage.
I was very young, just about to enter junior high school, when the original production of the hit Hair musical was first shown to rave, controversial, reviews in New York in the summer of 1968. As I was living in Hong Kong, I remember well that it was a time when American warships and aircraft carriers would bring American sailors to Hong Kong’s deep harbour, where the US service men, taking breaks from the Vietnam war, would go on shore to visit the many drinking holes in the infamous Wan Chai district of Hong Kong - then a British colony and thus an ally to the American government under Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ).
A couple of days ago, I saw the revived HAIR production in London, accompanied by a good friend from my Hong Kong school days. Although we are not exactly the flower children of the 1960s, it was a nostalgic trip that brought back memories of  catholic school-girls-cum-wannabe-hippies - long hair (for both guys and gals) with flowers, beads, tie-dye kaftans, patchwork ponchos and ragged blue jeans.  Innocent and naiive as we were, the songs however, in particular Aquarius, Easy to be Hard, Goodmorning Star Shine, Let the Sunshine In, reminded me of a time when we felt musically liberated, when we would go to parties where girls sat on one side of the room waiting for boys on the opposite side to come over to invite us to dance, and when guitar-strumming friends would lead us to sing folk songs written by Peter, Paul and Mary or Simon and Garfunkel even.
Youths of today may not resonate with the political and social make-up of the late 1960s, but they may find ‘fashion’ affiliation with that era. (Think of the labels Free People, Lucky Brand and Urban Outfitters.) Many baby boomers may have since moved on, thankfully, but many are probably still clinging on.  On a recent visit to San Francisco, my husband and I paid a visit to Castro, the district associated with the gay community in the 1960s and 70s and made famous again lately by the powerful movie MILK (about the gay activist and politician Harvey Milk), and we also took a look at the Haight and Ashbury Streets nearby, where in the 1960s it was the centre of the Hippie movement, that started just before the Summer of Love of 1967.  Today, the Haight-Ashbury district remains a thriving centre of independent local businesses, and is home to independent restaurants and bars, as well as clothing boutiques, booksellers, music stores and retailers of the counter-culture.
Do check out the slide show - "Inspirations from Streets of San Francisco" above!

Samantha Cameron Blooming Marvelously!

Headline news on 11th May - The Camerons on entering No. 10 Downing Street as Mr. and Mrs. PM for the first time. With Samantha Cameron as the new role model for expectant mothers, all eyes will be on what she will wearing to the various official functions before her baby is due in September.  The Camerons have two other children, Arthur Elwen, four, and Nancy Gwen, six. The family suffered very public heartache in February 2009 with the sudden death of their eldest son Ivan, six. He had severe cerebral palsy.
Not that she needs any help with her 'expanding' wardrobe, but I suspect Mrs. Cameron would want to support British brands, and I have gathered here a couple of options that Mrs. Cameron may like to consider, from two UK brands Seraphine and Cecily Plum for summer 2010.
Cocktail Dress from SeraphineCecily Plum's Fruitti Satin dress
Meanwhile Liz Thomas of Mail OnLine wrote yesterday that 40-year-old supermodel Claudia Schiffer looks radiant showing off her pregnancy on the cover of the just-published June edition of German Vogue. The cover shot was done when Schiffer was seven month pregnant. She and husband, director Matthew Vaughn, are expecting a baby girl due this month. Schiffer has joined a host of pregnant celebrities and stars, the likes of Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Lisa Marie Presley, to have done “a Demi'.
You may recall American actress Demi Moore started it all when she posed nude embracing her pregnancy for a magazine cover n 1991.

David Cameron and Nick Clegg wave to a New Dawn for British Government

David Cameron, new PM of GB, (left) with Nick Clegg, the new deputy PM (right). Photo taken on BBC news.
I woke up to a sunny morning, and indeed a new government has dawned on Great Britain.  I was again glued to the television set to watch the news, and to keep tap on the latest developments in British politics.  It was a remarkable day yesterday, it's a remarkable new start today.   Gordon Brown's farewell speech yesterday evening brought a tear to my eye, especially when afterwards he and Sarah led their two young sons out of No. 10 Downing Street, and it was the first time the two boys were shown to the public.
David Cameron, leader of Conservative party, is now UK's new PM, and he welcomed the new deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrats to No. 10 this morning for the a new day in British government, and we all feel for them for the difficult job at hand.  Without looking at photo captions, one can be forgiven for not able to tell which is which.  They do usher in a new era as two youngest persons ever to take up the two most important posts in British government for over 200 years. Good luck to them!

The sun finally sets on Gordon Brown's political career.

Sunset over Birling Gap, East Sussex. Photo by Lucia Carpio.

After five days of political uncertainty lingering over the UK since the parliamentary election last Thursday failed to produce a clear result as to which party will be governing the country, and endless speculation on the possibility of a hung parliament or even a 'rainbow' coalition, this evening the six o'clock BBC news suggested at last a decision is imminent.  News came through that talks between Gordon Brown's Labour party and  Nick Clegg's Liberal Democrat was reportedly over.   After 13 years on Downing Street, three as prime minister, Mr. Brown is said to be preparing to resign and vacate the premises for a certain David Cameron.  After all the Convservative party did gain the highest number of votes. A dramatic end to a few days of remarkable developments. So it seems the yellow sun is finally setting on Gordon Brown's political career.

Zandra Rhodes is first Chancellor of the UCA

Zandra Rhodes in her specially designed Chancellor gown.
The flamboyant fashion designer, Zandra Rhodes, known for her trademark pink hair, has been officially installed as the first Chancellor of the University for the Creative Arts (UCA).  She was inaugurated during a colourful ceremony, which included a catwalk show featuring pink-wigged models, last Thursday at Banqueting House in London.  Zandra was clad in a striking pink and green gown with elaborate gold embellishment which she designed for the ceremony.   “I wanted to create something that had the wow factor but remained in keeping with the sense of the occasion,” she explained. “I hope the distinctive colour scheme and intricately designed embroidery puts my own mark on what is usually a subdued, black garment.”  She's probably has started a trend for chancellors.  In her acceptance speech, Zandra said: “It is an enormous honour to become very first Chancellor of the University for the Creative Arts, where I began my own studies.   I will make it my utmost priority to ensure that future generations of students continue to have the same positive and inspiring experiences as I did.”   Zandra has a special relationship with UCA, having attended one of its founder institutions, The Medway College of Design, where her mother also taught.  As Chancellor, Zandra will act as the figurehead for the University which has campuses in Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham, Maidstone and Rochester. She will preside at its graduation ceremonies and will be the only other person aside from the Vice-Chancellor with the power to award degrees.

Eric Musgrave - new Director General of UK Fashion & Textile Association

Eric Musgrave, director general UKFT (foreground) with (from left) Peter Lucas (chairman) and John Wilson (deputy chairman.
Congratulations to Eric Musgrave who has taken over as director general of the UK Fashion &Textile Association (UKFT).  Musgrave succeeds John Wilson, who retires at the end of June after a 38-year association with the sectors’ trade bodies but will continue in a part-time capacity as a second deputy chairman. Musgrave joined UKFT in January 2010 as director general designate.   As a journalist, I have met both Eric Musgrave and John Wilson on many occasions when covering trade shows and fashion events.  In his 30-year career, Eric has held senior positions on fashion industry magazines both in the UK and on the Continent. He was made editorial director of Emap titles Drapers Record and Menswear in 2000 and oversaw the merger of the two magazines into Drapers in 2002, for which he won prestigious industry awards. During 10 years at Emap he was also heavily involved in the leading fashion trade fairs, Awards and conferences.  In October 2009, his first book, Sharp Suits, a coffee table celebration of men’s tailoring, was published to critical acclaim. In addition, Peter Lucas, UKFT’s chairman, also confirmed that UKFT would be moving to its new headquarters, at 3 Queen Square , in the heart of Bloomsbury, London , in September. “Our new home will enable us to better serve our members’ interests and to showcase their products in an exciting, modern space. We will have facilities for large- and small-scale presentations, as well as networking gatherings and more formal business events.”  Outgoing John Wilson has been involved with trade associations for the clothing and textile industry since 1972 and was appointed director of the British Clothing Industry Association (BCIA) in 1985. With the formation of the British Apparel & Textile Confederation (BATC) in 1992, he became its director general. When UKFT superseded BCIA in May 2009 he became its first director general. He was awarded the OBE in 1999 for services to the clothing and textile industry. In April 2010 he was appointed chairman of the fashion and textile council of Skillset, the sector skills council for creative media.   Concurrent with Wilson ’s retirement from full-time employment, after 26 years’ service to the industry, Elizabeth Fox , a deputy director and company secretary of UKFT, will relinquish these roles, but will continue as executive director of the National Childrenswear Association (NCWA).

NearFar comes to London!

Sierra Leonean print dress by NearFar
To keep our minds off "hung-parliament" developments in the UK political scene, for the time being at least ... cult retailer Anthropologie, known for championing brands with soul, meaning and of course great designs, is bringing a unique brand of ethnic fashion from far away to a store near you, if you happen to be in London this summer.  The brand, NearFar, set up by Stephanie Hogg, features tailored playsuits and highwaisted shorts as well as shift dresses inspired by traditional Sierra Leonean prints.  At the heart of the brand and its designs is the passion to work with and be inspired by the Sierra Leonean people. NearFar is unique in that it works with organisations that train young Sierra Leoneans in the art of tailoring. Ten Years of Civil War has left the country with many uneducated and unemployed young people. Many of the tailors have lived as street children, been victims of commercial sex trade or been subjected to domestic abuse. In association with her close partner GoalSTA, NearFar has been able to help tailors profit from their skills and rebuild a life of stability for themselves and their families. NearFar's commitment to this cause is demonstrated by the fact that 10% of all sales is reinvested into the training of young tailors.

The meaning of Blue!

Bluebells in Banstead Woods. Photo by Lucia Carpio.
This time of the year, Bluebells spring up in the British countryside as Mother Nature promises. However this year, due to a long harsh winter that we had, I found Bluebells not as vibrant and widespread as previous years. And according to experts, they may not stay around for very long. Nevertheless, the sighting of bluebells is always an uplifting one when I go for walks in the woods of Surrey. This morning, I hoped my spirits would be uplifted too if I woke up to the news that the Conservatives were declared a clear winner in the parliamentary election. I did try to stay up last night to catch the latest developments on the election polls but eventually succumbed to fatigue. But as I was writing this, and as many had predicted, a Hung Parliament has been declared. The Conservative Party – the Blues – have not got a clear majority and Labour – the Reds – are still in power. But for how much longer?

What is your favourite Election Colour! Think Act Vote!

I hope most of you will be joining many of us to go to the polls tomorrow - May 6th - and vote in one of the most "colourful" elections we've seen in the UK.
    Think Act Vote T-shirts
Blue is usually one of my favourite colours in fashion. But when it comes to political parties of the country, I'm now torn between blue - the Conversatives and yellow - the Liberal Democrats. It's hard to decide and I'm asking myself, putting their manifesto aside, who will make a good prime minister? Campaigner and founder of  "Think Act Vote", Amisha Ghadiali ( of ethical fashion brand, Amisha Jewellery) said: “If politics were a fashion label, you wouldn’t wear it. We want to use creativity to create a community around the choices we make for our future.”  Think Act Vote is using creative energy to inspire people to think positively about our future The campaign kicked-off in February with a competition to design the perfect campaign t-shirt. Judged by a panel of some of ethical fashion’s best-known faces, including Katharine Hamnett and Cyndi Rhoades, as well as “queen of cool” Daisy de Villeneuve, the winning design was printed onto Earth Positive t-shirts and are available to buy for £20.   Eight leading ethical designers…Tara Starlet, Ada Zanditon, Nicola Woods of Beautiful Soul, Sarah Ratty of Ciel, Annika Sanders and Kerry Seager of Junky Styling, Paula Kirkwood of TRAIDremade, Tamsin and Seraphina Davies of Nancy Dee, Katie Wieghtman of Miksani ... were involved in the Refashioned Project, which involved customising the original campaign t-shirt or making a show piece using off-cuts from their previous collections. The purpose? Encourage creativity and show that fashion can be used to express a message. They were sent down the catwalk at UK Aware, Alternative Fashion Week, and are also gracing Think Act Vote’s The Future I Choose Celebration today, 5th May.
