Zandra Rhodes is first Chancellor of the UCA

The flamboyant fashion designer, Zandra Rhodes, known for her trademark pink hair, has been officially installed as the first Chancellor of the University for the Creative Arts (UCA).  She was inaugurated during a colourful ceremony, which included a catwalk show featuring pink-wigged models, last Thursday at Banqueting House in London.  Zandra was clad in a striking pink and green gown with elaborate gold embellishment which she designed for the ceremony.   “I wanted to create something that had the wow factor but remained in keeping with the sense of the occasion,” she explained. “I hope the distinctive colour scheme and intricately designed embroidery puts my own mark on what is usually a subdued, black garment.”  She's probably has started a trend for chancellors.  In her acceptance speech, Zandra said: “It is an enormous honour to become very first Chancellor of the University for the Creative Arts, where I began my own studies.   I will make it my utmost priority to ensure that future generations of students continue to have the same positive and inspiring experiences as I did.”   Zandra has a special relationship with UCA, having attended one of its founder institutions, The Medway College of Design, where her mother also taught.  As Chancellor, Zandra will act as the figurehead for the University which has campuses in Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham, Maidstone and Rochester. She will preside at its graduation ceremonies and will be the only other person aside from the Vice-Chancellor with the power to award degrees.

Zandra Rhodes Bags It!

Zandra Rhodes, the eccentric iconic British designer, well known for her fuchsia pink hair, dramatic makeup and bold artsy jewellery (and founder of the Fashion and Textile Museum Take a peekin Bermondsey, south of the River Thames ) got all excited and chatty when showing off her new and first handbag collection at the PURE trade fair held in Olympia London fair early this week. The range of 12 styles, ranging from sleek clutches to clasp frame evening bags, chic carry-all handbags and smart shapes for hanging over the shoulder, are made by Portal Worldwide Ltd. and retailed between £25 and £69. Made mostly in luxe metallic PVC, high gloss patents, faux suede and snakeskin finishes, the bags boost ZR signature touches, including logo plates and shocking pink jacquard lining. "All the metal found on the bags are in lovely rose gold," enthused Zandra. "My favourite is the clutch bag with the rose cut-outs."


Jason Walshaw, managing director of Portal Worldwide, established six years ago was on-hand to answer questions, sporting a bright pink cardigan himself. The company has previously worked with Oswald Boateng and supplies bags for "comfort kits" handed out to first and business class airline passengers travelling on British Airways, Air Mauritius and Virgin Atlantic. The company has its own "Pure" range of handbags and produces also the "Red or Ded" bags.
