Congratulations to Eric Musgrave who has taken over as director general of the UK Fashion &Textile Association (UKFT). Musgrave succeeds John Wilson, who retires at the end of June after a 38-year association with the sectors’ trade bodies but will continue in a part-time capacity as a second deputy chairman. Musgrave joined UKFT in January 2010 as director general designate. As a journalist, I have met both Eric Musgrave and John Wilson on many occasions when covering trade shows and fashion events. In his 30-year career, Eric has held senior positions on fashion industry magazines both in the UK and on the Continent. He was made editorial director of Emap titles Drapers Record and Menswear in 2000 and oversaw the merger of the two magazines into Drapers in 2002, for which he won prestigious industry awards. During 10 years at Emap he was also heavily involved in the leading fashion trade fairs, Awards and conferences. In October 2009, his first book, Sharp Suits, a coffee table celebration of men’s tailoring, was published to critical acclaim. In addition, Peter Lucas, UKFT’s chairman, also confirmed that UKFT would be moving to its new headquarters, at 3 Queen Square , in the heart of Bloomsbury, London , in September. “Our new home will enable us to better serve our members’ interests and to showcase their products in an exciting, modern space. We will have facilities for large- and small-scale presentations, as well as networking gatherings and more formal business events.” Outgoing John Wilson has been involved with trade associations for the clothing and textile industry since 1972 and was appointed director of the British Clothing Industry Association (BCIA) in 1985. With the formation of the British Apparel & Textile Confederation (BATC) in 1992, he became its director general. When UKFT superseded BCIA in May 2009 he became its first director general. He was awarded the OBE in 1999 for services to the clothing and textile industry. In April 2010 he was appointed chairman of the fashion and textile council of Skillset, the sector skills council for creative media. Concurrent with Wilson ’s retirement from full-time employment, after 26 years’ service to the industry, Elizabeth Fox , a deputy director and company secretary of UKFT, will relinquish these roles, but will continue as executive director of the National Childrenswear Association (NCWA).
