What is the link between an Irish golf champion and an event organiser in California?

Black and Red was the colour theme for a private party in San Diego. Party essentials supplied by ClassicPartyRentals.com Photo by Lucia Carpio

Congratulations to Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland for winning the US Open Golf 2010 championship that was completed a few days ago  on June 20 in Pebble Beach, California.
Although I was visiting California at the time, I could only watch the tournament on TV but I did have the chance to see the beautiful coastline of southern Californian and visited the 17-mile drive at Pebble Beach with my hubby a few years ago.  It's an impressive scenic place to match South Africa's southern coast.  If you had read my piece on the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa posted on June 4th, you would realise how much I have been taken by the South African coastline. Anyway, if you were following the US Open this year, you would probably wonder who set up the US Open Village used by the members of the Pebble Beach Resoorts and golfers of the championship this year.  It's the work of Classic, an event organiser and party rental company headquartered in Los Angeles.

Classic Party Rentals' high-profile event roster includes Hollywood awards shows and movie premieres, celebrity weddings and charity events.
But no job is too small for Classic.  Last week I was in San Diego attending a small private party and the hosts also hired Classic for their party essentials.  The hosts were celebrating the graduation of their son, whose school colour was Red and Black, which by the way are often the colours of Tiger Wood's attire when he's competing.
Check out this link to see the video on the US Open Village set up by Classic.  The US Open Championship returns to Pebble Beach in 2019.

Queen visits Wimbledon after 33 years

The Queen meets (L-R) Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic, Andy Roddick, Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki Photo: GETTY IMAGES
It is great to see such warm and sunny weather as the covers come off this week and the grass courts of Wimbledon come alive with tennis.  This morning though, rather than doning on their tennis gear, luminaries of the tennis world put on their best behaviour to greet the Queen of England, who had gone to SW19 for the first time in 33 years (since 1977 - the year when British women's tennis star Virginia Wade won the women's title). Queen Elizabeth's greatest sporting passion has always been horse racing, and she never misses a day at Royal Ascot, parading down the course in an open landau every year.

But according to those who know, her father was a keen tennis player. Before his accession, King George VI competed in the men's doubles at the 1926 championships.  He and Commander Greig were easily defeated in the first round.  Queen Elizabeth will meet Andy Murray (Britain's no. 1 in professional tennis) today and see him in action on Centre Court, but her visit comes after Wimbledon history was made last night on Court 18. Nicolas Mahut and John Isner – unknown to the wider sporting world until yesterday and are now household names if you follow the news - as they will drag their weary bodies back on to court at Wimbledon this evening to resume the longest match in tennis history as the Queen makes her first visit since 1977.  (Isner finally won this record-breaking match.)

If you are stuck for inspiration to wear to see the tennis matches in Wimbledon, you may be pleased to learn that a new shopping destination aimed at the modern woman, WomenLikeUsClothing.com, is offering easy to wear tunics and shirts, and has just added some bright, cheery summer accessories, including colourful beaded bracelets and long necklaces, plus options to take to the beach if you are planning for holiday in a sunny spot, such as a statement beach bag, sarong and beach wrap.
As part of the new range of jewellery, there are beautiful beaded bracelets in a choice of chunky or more delicate shapes, and in monochrome blue, orange, deep purple or mixed colours. Long necklaces look great teamed with a summer dress, or a WomenLikeUsClothing.com tunic and are a great way to jazz up an outfit, creating an effortlessly stylish and fashionable look.

But if you're invited to summer garden parties, take cues from celebrities who recently attended one charity event hosted by Mikhail Gorbachev, the former Russian President.  In honour of his late wife, Gorbachev co-hosted the Raisa Gorbachev Foundation's fifth annual Midsummer Gala with Alexander and Evgeny Lebedev, owners of the Independent titles and the London Evening Standard newspapers, at their home, Stud House, in the grounds of the Hampton Court Palace, joined by leading figures from the worlds of art, fashion, music and film.

While Alexander  Lebedev here wore a suit that appeared to have come from Dickens time, his wife Evgeny wore feathers and sheer in nude colour.

Actresses Angelica Huston Joely Richardson wore long gowns in black and white, or white with an empire line, looking elegant and cool.

Double silk dresses by Anna Sholz
As Ladies Day at Ascot (17th June) fast approaches and attendees await the opportunity to show off fashion’s finest creations, new research by Mintel reveals that nearly half (12.7 million) of women in the UK spent the same or more on their clothes over the past year – despite a year of recession.
Furthermore, over half of overall UK consumers (54%) did not reduce the amount they spent on clothes and around four in ten consumers did not alter their clothes-shopping habits and a dedicated one in ten followers of fashion say they actually spent more on clothes than they usually would, despite the economic difficulties.
Tamara Sender, Senior Fashion Analyst at Mintel, said:  “Our love of clothes shopping in Britain seems to have overridden economic concerns and the fact that the clothes industry has continued to increase market value is testament to where clothes buying lies in our priorities. While consumers have cut back on leisure activities such as holidays and eating out, they have continued to spend on clothing and footwear - indicating that they are being selective about what to spend their money on and are choosing to buy clothing over a meal out. It is clear that many people consider clothing to be a ‘treat’ purchase that now forms part of their essential spend, and even during recession, people will splash out on relatively low-ticket items such as clothes to lift their mood.”
Designerwear buyers were the consumers most likely to have spent more on clothes last year, with nearly two in ten of them spending more in 2009 than previously.
In addition, over a quarter adults say they are buying more from premium ranges (e.g. Designers at Debenhams, M&S Autograph). Meanwhile, almost one in three consumers invest more in timeless styles instead of the latest trends, demonstrating a move away from fast, disposable fashion and towards garments with lasting appeal.
Indeed, it seems quality rules for fashion forward Brits these days. Just over a quarter of consumers say they are willing to pay more for better-quality clothes that will last longer. While the quality over quantity trend appears to be on the rise, it seems that despite our love of high end fashion, Brits just can’t resist a bargain. According to the survey, nearly half of consumers say that they mostly buy clothes on sale or special offer and over a third that they buy more from value clothing retailers than they did pre-recession.
Mintel’s research also reveals mood is another influence on purchasing power for today’s consumers.
A quarter of consumers buy clothes to cheer themselves up when they are having a bad day, and this behaviour is more common among the big spenders in 2009 and/or in the year ahead.  Retailers of premium brands should consider ways to put consumers at ease to assist the quarter of consumers who feel intimidated in expensive clothes stores.  So ladies, continue to shop till you drop.  It's good for you and good for the economy.

Mudpie hosted informative seminars at London College of Fashion

Fiona Jervey hosted the Mudpie seminars at the LCF
Today’s consumers are adapting to a new model for living based on an alternative future that combines science and technology with social cohesion and collective influence, according to Fiona Jenvey CEO of Mudpie Ltd, who hosted a series of seminars at the London College of Fashion last week, covering men's, women's and kids' trends.
The success of Mudpie today demonstrates that you can run an international design and fashion trend forecasting house without having to be based in London (often the preferred choice for the headquarters of top international clothing brands, retailers and companies in the UK) as Fiona’s company is based on the UK’s south coast (in Southampton) where she runs Mudpie with her husband and co-director Andrew, who is CFO of Mudpie.  The company was established as a design consultancy in 1993.  I got to know Fiona in 2006.  Fiona was enlisted to join a panel of industry experts for the International Colour Authority (ICA) for seasonal colour predictions, published by ITBD Benjamin Dent.  Since then, Fiona launched Mdpclick.com, today a successful information on-line service for fashion brands and retailers.   She told me then that she wanted to launch Mdpclick to rival WGSN, but at more competitive prices.

Attendees from the industry peruse Mudpie's Trend Books
Fiona regularly speaks at major trend events in Europe, the Americas and Asia and contributes her trend insights to industry and education publications. Under Fiona's direction, Mudpie produces trend information books for the contemporary women's, men's and children's wear industries. Fiona has formed strategic partnerships with the likes of magazine publishers, trade fairs and industry specialists in over fifty countries worldwide.
Fiona Jenvey graduated from the London College of Fashion in 1989 and has worked within the UK retail sector as a design and product manager for a number of retailers. I am happy to see that Mudpie has now grown tremendously and have opened offices worldwide.
For the Autumn/winter 2011/12 season, Fiona predicts three trends:- Synergy, Primal and Innovate. Influences include traditions and architecture of the Nordic States and Scandinavian aesthetic to inspire contemporary looks.
    Facts On Mugpie:-
    • Mudpie, the independently owned, international trend forecasting service, was established in 1992 by Fiona Jenvey, CEO.
    • Mudpie is the largest UK operating trend service, with 20 years of experience in the industry and the largest range in trend-lead products.
    • Mudpie produces a range of seasonal trendbooks, an online trend service and printed and online denim service, and operates a commercial, graphic and print design consultancy.
    • The Mudpie network spans more than 50 countries and has 17 international branded offices; Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, Germany, India, Israel, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, USA West Coast.
    • Mudpie provides trend intelligence to important industry trade fairs including: GlobalTex, The Brandery, CIFF Kids, MAGIC and Munich Fabric Start.
    • Mudpie has worked in collaboration with a variety of leading trend publications including: View2, Zoom on fashion trends, Collezioni 0-3, Childrenswear Buyer and Womenswear Buyer.
    • Mudpie has pioneered a unique business-to-business model, collaborating with parallel businesses and sharing knowledge to help build the industry.

Young Fashion Designers Wow the industry - What about employment?

Rebecca Thomson, Manchester School of Art graduate with her Gold award winning collection. Photo by Lucia Carpio.
I am delighted that a collection of well-constructed blouses accented with bow-ties, lace bib-collars and multi-folds, have won Rebecca Thomson, a BA (Hons.) Fashion graduate from Manchester University School of Art, the top prize at the Graduate Fashion Week gala show held at Earls Court in London this week.  Congratulations to Rebecca, 22, for winning not only the River Island Gold award but also £20,000.  Italian designer Alberta Ferratti of the judging panel said she appreciated Rebecca's strength in putting alot of effort and emotion into her garments.  Citing Betty Jackson as her favourite designer, Rebecca said inspiration came from photographer Roman Vishniac's work documenting Jewish children in Eastern Europe and Rackham's 1930s book illustrations.  It has been a busy week at the Graduate Fashion Week and thanks to the continued sponsorship of UK retailer River Island, it has been another successful event.  The Gala Show was a glittering affair for many wonderful talented designers from the UK and abroad to show their creativity to potential employers.   With an estimated 3000 fashion students graduating every year it’s tougher than ever for individuals to break their way into the industry. Richard Bradbury CBE, River Island CEO said he hopes their sponsorship "allows us to give students a spring board to start their careers, whilst allowing us the opportunity to source talent for all areas of our own business.”
Terry Mansfield, CBE, Chairman of GFW, at the pre-Gala cocktail, Earls Court, London. Photo by Lucia Carpio.
At the pre-show cocktail event, I caught up with Terry Mansfield, chairman of GFW and he acknowledged that the industry is challenging but employers should recognise that these design talents are assets and are the future.  "My message to all potential employers is this - they got to take a chance on these new creative talents."  He also said current government statistics state that the creative industries accounted for 6.2 percent of UK Gross Value Added in 2007 and, calculated as a percentage of GDP, the UK has the largest creative industries sector in the world.  In addition to 40 universities and fashion colleges from across the UK, the show also gave platform to six universities and institutes from around the world, representing  France, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia, Switzerland, and Singapore.  Many of their graduates also took part in the gala show.  For a full list of award winners, go to the Graduate Fashion Week website.  Do check out the slide show  of the GFW Gala Show highlights (all photos by Lucia Carpio) posted above.

Football Fever! I'm dreaming of South Africa

Ralph Lauren Polo World Cup Tee shirtUnless you're living on another planet, there's no excuse for not noticing that football fever will soon be dominating our lives, especially if you live in any of the participating country teams, such as England, France, Brazil etc., playing in the FIFA World Cup 2010.  There'll be many sleepless nights for those residing in different time zones, like many fans I know in Hong Kong , who will have red eyes for days to come.  That's because, in less than a week, the beautiful game will be on our screens Big Time, unless you have trekked over to South Africa to watch the matches in person.  I wish I could - not a big football fan, but a great admirer of the 'beautiful south'.  I was in South Africa on holiday not too long ago.  My husband and I arrived in Cape Town to see in the new year (2010) and in two weeks, we drove a thousand miles, from south of Cape Town to East Cape along the South African coast and were amazed by the breath-taking landscapes and beautiful scenery, not to mention abundance flora and fauna and wildlife.
After exploring the capes, we drove along the Garden Route, stopping along the way at national parks and seaside towns (such as Wilderness, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay) and onwards to Port Elizabeth and beyond, to a safari park called Addo Elephant Park, canoeing on Sundays River, then drove back, along the same route more or less, ending in Hermanus and Kleinmond, before heading to Cape Town via Betty's Bay and Gordon's Bay for our flight back to London. We almost didn't want to leave. We didn't have the chance to visit north of the country on this trip but when the news yesterday following the England team's arrival in Johannesburg (Jo-Burg to the locals) and taken to their training base - the newly built multi-million pound Royal Bafokeng Sports Campus at Rustenburg, I was transported back to the beautiful lanscape of South Africa.  I could almost hear the waves crashing on the dramatic coast. Depreciated British Pound lures Oscar de la Renta to London

London's prestigious Selfridges department store for luxury brands - a destination for shoppers from around the world. Photo by Lucia Carpio
I have been following on-line the Reuters Global Luxury Summit and at the event currently held in New York, I find it interesting that the US-based fashion house, Oscar de la Renta, best known for ultra-luxurious cocktail dresses and evening gowns, and high-end women's sportswear, is choosing London over Paris to open a new store in the British capital.  According to chief executive Alex Bolen, Oscar de la Renta is actively looking into opening a store in London, as the depreciation of the British pound has made doing business here more affordable. He said, Oscar de la Renta would like to have a greater presence in Paris as the U.S.-based fashion house seeks to boost its overseas sales, but high rents preclude it from opening a store there for now. I think Mr. Bolen will find his brand will be in good company.  He just needs to look at Bond Street, Regent Street and Westfield shopping centre in London.  Besides, London also has got high-end prestigious department stores for luxury brands like Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Selfridges, that compete well with the likes of Le Printemps, Galeries Lafayette and Le Bon Marche.  He is right that the weak Pound is luring tourists by the bucket loads to the UK although the Euro has depreciated as well lately.
"Paris makes tremendous sense for us as a fashion capital, visibility-wise, but rents in Paris are really still very tough," he said, adding that Europe 's current debt crisis and the uncertainty in global stock markets was also giving him pause about the impact on luxury spending.  Expansion abroad should help Oscar de la Renta increase the ratio of sales from international markets. In the medium term, Bolen said he would like to see overseas sales account for about half of total sales, up from roughly a third now.
Other top executives at the Reuters Luxury Summit also held in Paris this week warned that the luxury industry's recent recovery is likely to be short-lived in Europe if governments' new austerity measures prompt consumers to rein in spending. Bulgari Chief Executive Francesco Trapani said he expected higher taxes and budget belt-tightening to really start biting next year.  As a result, European shoppers, traditionally big consumers of luxury goods, were likely to become increasingly thrifty.
Europe is the biggest manufacturer of luxury goods in the world and makes up about a quarter of worldwide luxury sales, with a significant part coming from visitors.  The recent Greek debt crisis and fears of contagion have precipitated talks of spending cuts and pension reforms throughout Europe and raised fears of a double-dip recession.  German data earlier this week showed consumer sentiment was likely to fall in June, as the euro zone crisis weighed on households' view of the economy and income expectations.  Meanwhile, French consumer confidence fell to its lowest level in a year in May, as households worried about their future finances and living standards.  But until now, the somber mood has not affected the luxury industry.

Disused Underground Station for launching Replay's Grungewear

Photo by Lucia CarpioPhoto by Lucia Carpio
Italian brand Replay, known for its denim and casualwear, recently launched its new autumn/winter 2011 collection in London in a disused underground station.  A fitting backdrop for its new collection of Wintry Grunge ranges for men and women.  The disused Aldwych station on Surrey Street in WC2 is not far from the River Thames but if you try looking it up on the present underground map, you won't find it.  It's situated somewhat between Holborn and Covent Garden.
A main theme of the collection was Spirit of Aspen, taking inspiration from skiwear with layered silhouettes of double lined gilets and heavy slim-fitting knitwear.  Classic fabrics are matched with technical materials to form complex jackets where nylon is placed alongside denim, camouflage fabrics, check patterns and velvet in an eclectic mix.  The collection does have a mountain feel of the North American kind.  I went to university in Colorado, and Aspen was an elite ski resort that I couldn't afford, on a student's budget, to go very often.  But it is the place to at least visit once if you love skiing in the US, where you go to see and be seen. I had gone a couple of times to do research on ski fashion for a local newspaper as part of my journalism course work.

Other areas of the collection took inspiration from Nordic Nights with a more sophisticated tailored look and suits more evening wear but with edgy skull graphic print T-shirts, lightweight knits and accessories.
Then there's the Weekend Get Away with a more relaxed range in a palette of bright colours including light khakis purple.  The Custom Grunge collection allows the wearer to express his or her own personality by mixing and matching key items in an original way to achieve a relaxed, practical look with a grunge twist, recalling the mythical nineties.
Denim remains the centre of the entire collection and has a strong influence on all categories.  The washes are mostly dark and very intense with a strong vintage feel.  The new superior denim line, Red Seal, is destined to become a cult icon.  Retail price for these are at a whopping £280 each when they hit the stores in the autumn.
Every season, Replay evolves and continues to offer desirable designs, especially if you're looking for a vintage look with a rock and roll style.  Hammered studs applied to leather and denim pockets as well as jersey all feature strongly in the ranges in the Autumn/winter 2010-11 collection.  I particularly like the graphics that reveal an intentionally dark side where insects, skulls, wild animals, stars and flowers interweave to create unique compositions and unexpected images. The denims also have a vintage dark effect with a high level of customisation.  The disused underground station certainly played up the Replay message well.
