Disused Underground Station for launching Replay's Grungewear

Italian brand Replay, known for its denim and casualwear, recently launched its new autumn/winter 2011 collection in London in a disused underground station.  A fitting backdrop for its new collection of Wintry Grunge ranges for men and women.  The disused Aldwych station on Surrey Street in WC2 is not far from the River Thames but if you try looking it up on the present underground map, you won't find it.  It's situated somewhat between Holborn and Covent Garden.
A main theme of the collection was Spirit of Aspen, taking inspiration from skiwear with layered silhouettes of double lined gilets and heavy slim-fitting knitwear.  Classic fabrics are matched with technical materials to form complex jackets where nylon is placed alongside denim, camouflage fabrics, check patterns and velvet in an eclectic mix.  The collection does have a mountain feel of the North American kind.  I went to university in Colorado, and Aspen was an elite ski resort that I couldn't afford, on a student's budget, to go very often.  But it is the place to at least visit once if you love skiing in the US, where you go to see and be seen. I had gone a couple of times to do research on ski fashion for a local newspaper as part of my journalism course work.

Other areas of the collection took inspiration from Nordic Nights with a more sophisticated tailored look and suits more evening wear but with edgy skull graphic print T-shirts, lightweight knits and accessories.
Then there's the Weekend Get Away with a more relaxed range in a palette of bright colours including light khakis purple.  The Custom Grunge collection allows the wearer to express his or her own personality by mixing and matching key items in an original way to achieve a relaxed, practical look with a grunge twist, recalling the mythical nineties.

Denim remains the centre of the entire collection and has a strong influence on all categories.  The washes are mostly dark and very intense with a strong vintage feel.  The new superior denim line, Red Seal, is destined to become a cult icon.  Retail price for these are at a whopping £280 each when they hit the stores in the autumn.
Every season, Replay evolves and continues to offer desirable designs, especially if you're looking for a vintage look with a rock and roll style.  Hammered studs applied to leather and denim pockets as well as jersey all feature strongly in the ranges in the Autumn/winter 2010-11 collection.  I particularly like the graphics that reveal an intentionally dark side where insects, skulls, wild animals, stars and flowers interweave to create unique compositions and unexpected images. The denims also have a vintage dark effect with a high level of customisation.  The disused underground station certainly played up the Replay message well.
