Unless you're living on another planet, there's no excuse for not noticing that football fever will soon be dominating our lives, especially if you live in any of the participating country teams, such as England, France, Brazil etc., playing in the FIFA World Cup 2010. There'll be many sleepless nights for those residing in different time zones, like many fans I know in Hong Kong , who will have red eyes for days to come. That's because, in less than a week, the beautiful game will be on our screens Big Time, unless you have trekked over to South Africa to watch the matches in person. I wish I could - not a big football fan, but a great admirer of the 'beautiful south'. I was in South Africa on holiday not too long ago. My husband and I arrived in Cape Town to see in the new year (2010) and in two weeks, we drove a thousand miles, from south of Cape Town to East Cape along the South African coast and were amazed by the breath-taking landscapes and beautiful scenery, not to mention abundance flora and fauna and wildlife. After exploring the capes, we drove along the Garden Route, stopping along the way at national parks and seaside towns (such as Wilderness, Knysna, Plettenberg Bay) and onwards to Port Elizabeth and beyond, to a safari park called Addo Elephant Park, canoeing on Sundays River, then drove back, along the same route more or less, ending in Hermanus and Kleinmond, before heading to Cape Town via Betty's Bay and Gordon's Bay for our flight back to London. We almost didn't want to leave. We didn't have the chance to visit north of the country on this trip but when the news yesterday following the England team's arrival in Johannesburg (Jo-Burg to the locals) and taken to their training base - the newly built multi-million pound Royal Bafokeng Sports Campus at Rustenburg, I was transported back to the beautiful lanscape of South Africa. I could almost hear the waves crashing on the dramatic coast.
